Ask the Expert
A. OSHA's Machine Guarding Standard has no actual distance mentioned in the standard to determine the distance from the guard to the point of operation. The Machine Guarding Standard says the following on point of operation. It is the area on a machine where work is actually performed upon the material being processed.
The point of operation of machines whose operation exposes an employee to injury, shall be guarded. The guarding device shall be in conformity with any appropriate standards or in the absence of applicable specific standards, shall be designed and constructed as to prevent the operator from having any part of his body in the danger zone during the operating cycle. Special hand tools for placing and removing material shall be to permit easy handling of material without the operator placing a hand in the danger zone.

Meet the Experts: Michael Cowman
Have you ever wondered the mind that heads up an organization like SafetyCertified? Well prepare yourself to meet Michael Cowman. I have to say by far the best CEO I have ever known!
Michael Cowman joined SafetyCertified in 2006 as CEO, bringing over 20 years of training and leadership experience. After graduating Iowa State University with a degree in Film & Television, Michael joined American Media—a leading corporate video training company. With his creative talents and vigorous energy, it didn’t take long for him to be promoted to Vice President of Production, where his video training work was acclaimed world-wide. He directed numerous best-selling training programs for prestigious clients including the U.S. Navy, Sears, Hilton, Wells Fargo, the U.S. Postal Service, and hundreds more. In 1999, Michael’s entrepreneurial spirit drove him to start his own video training company VisionPoint Training. For five years, he served as President and CEO at VisionPoint, which also proved to be a very successful company celebrated for its film production quality and award-winning content, including the mega blockbuster hit Whale Done! In 2004, Michael sold VisionPoint so he could “kick back and retire” at the young age of 42. But, after a few months on the beach, his business building mindset kicked in and he couldn’t resist jumping back into the training business—this time with online training. Michael’s experience in leading people, developing innovative training, and creating and executing a company’s vision is why he is passionate about growing SafetyCertified to become a first-class safety and technology company.
